The road ends, but the journey continues...

And The Winner Is…

“Admit it. You tuned in to see who won a copy of “What I Wish I Could Tell You.”  Well, I’ll get to that right after this…”

Thus begins a typical winner revealing post from the blog of L.Marie with my own book offering inserted into the original text.  That great opening line is in fact taken from one of my favorite posts of hers called “Wall-to-Wall People.”   It is a fine example of how easily she articulates thoughts I am only able to think.
For instance, one of my biggest soap boxes is about the term ‘diversity’ – add to that my own childhood experiences in Chicago and L.Marie hits a bullseye in the following excerpt:

“…walking through the Loop each week, I can’t help noticing the diversity of the crowds. Now, I realize the word diversity gets some people’s hackles up for various reasons…
But I live near a city that is a melting pot. (sic) Walking in an area with wall-to-wall people helps me see what diversity looks like on a daily basis. It’s not tokenism, but rather, a natural occurrence. The crowd is what it is.

…I can’t pretend I know “all about” the perspective of someone who is different from me—even if I have  a diverse group of friends. But I know my own perspective in a diverse world, and can address my observations. And I can keep asking questions to get to know people who are different from me.”

I guess you can tell she’s an author with an eye for observation and (he)art for using writing as a form of communicating ideas.
I’ve been following her blog for almost as long as we’ve both been blogging. In addition to writing insightful and delightful articles, she interviews authors on a regular basis.
Those articles provide exposure to quality works that often get obscured by the sheer mass of what’s out there and promoted by mainstream publishers. And, she is the queen of free book giveaway contests!
About a year ago yours truly won a free copy of “Heading North” a collection of poetry by Andrew James Murray.  I liked what I read and promptly wrote my own shoutout in support of this poet and his poems.
Moving right along…here’s who won the free copy of “What I Wish I Could Tell You.”
Ready?
Congratulations, Deborah Brasket!
And thank you to all who commented.

Congratulations to Deborah! Maybe I’m naive, but is there really a controversy about the term “diversity”? What could possibly be controversial about a word that means “the condition of being different”?

    • laura bruno lilly

Oh dear Janis, that is something I cannot put in a soundbite and also have a hard time expressing on-line rather than face-to-face…obviously the stuff of a more in depth blog post/article.
I like that quote by Mark Twain and because you are a traveler you will relate to it too, I’m sure: it goes something like this – “Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness…”
      peace
