WE ATE TATE (poem)

from-Swimming with Swans: vignettes of our three year journey between homes
(Goat Suite Saga #4)

February 2011 (desert outside Las Cruces, NM)

A ‘good breeder’
With ‘fine structure’

               Tater
               Billy’s favorite

Over 200 pounds of solid muscle mass
And mango-manhood display

               Tater
               Billy’s favorite

Lean, but not mean
Son of Mama Goat
Brother & Father of
Terry & Larry

               Tater
               Billy’s favorite

White paper-wrapped gifts in our freezer
Empty pen outside
A circle of life sort of thing
Billy knows

Tater tips ‘n rice
Glasses filled with red wine
Feeding us now
In our time of need

               Tater
               Billy’s favorite

Baby Tater & Billy ~ Christmas 2009

A ‘good breeder’
With ‘fine structure’

               Tater
               Billy’s favorite

“AN HONEST TRIBUTE”—Don’t you think that’s a part of ‘knowing where your food comes from’ that is neglected? Often, once the source of meat is known, the first reaction is to reject eating meat forever…nothing wrong with that decision except to say it could be modified to reflect a sense of honor to the meat-provider in his/her role in the circle of life as provider of human nourishment…Just a thought…
But, personally, I still prefer goat cheese!!!
