Part of the trouble is the 24 hour news cycle, I think. The more such events are publicized, the more people who are not quite right see such behavior as a way to get their 15 minutes of fame. I’m not in favor of media bashing either, but feeding people’s ghoulish interest isn’t healthy for individuals or society.

Ultimately we each need to find a place of peace with these all-too-common-now occurrences. Not in resignation to the fact of their routine happening but in order to enable us to more fully live through them while sprinkling help/hope/possible solutions/support/etc to those affected around us.
As you say, Jane: Yes, it is important to pause and remember.
