The road ends, but the journey continues...

Buon' Natale – Merry Christmas – Feliz Navidad

The thing of it is: I remember where I was when I first heard this. I was in my bedroom, doing homework on the floor, while listening to music on the radio, circa Thanksgiving holidays 1970.
Where were you?

I don’t remember where I was but I remember seeing Jose Feliciano on all the major variety shows back then. Such a talented man, and he seemed really nice too 🙂 Merry Christmas, Laura!

Yep, you’re right about that! Thanks for chiming in, Marie. Merry Christmas and here’s to a peaceful 2020.

That was a fun blast from the past! I was living in an apartment in a late 19th century house one block from the Texas Capitol in Austin when I first heard that song on a borrowed radio! Happy holidays to you, Laura!

Oh Mary, Mary, I love the tidbits of your herstory…much better than the average Southerner I’ve encountered in my time in FloTown.
Merryness to your family and may all your quilts be bright!

I can’t recall the first time I heard to song, but growing up, it was always a favorite in our house. Wishing you and your family a peaceful Christmas, Laura.

May you have many hours of ‘puzzling’ during your holiday vacay!
      🙂

Hi Laura! I want to wish you a Merry Christmas, as well, from the bottom of my heart. This song is definitely a Christmas standard now. I probably didn’t first hear it until later – maybe 1975 when I got my first car. Before then I wasn’t exposed to current music very often until I had control of my own radio. Then the world opened up to me! ~smile~ Roseanne

Like I said to Laura – the radio really is a cultural icon! Especially when blasted while driving your own car!
      Have a great holiday!

  5. Laura

I don’t remember where I was, but I certainly heard it on the radio.
    Merry Christmas, Laura!

Yep, the radio – communication for the masses at the flick of a switch! I miss the sense of community it engendered back in the day. Our music ‘distribution’ is so fragmented these days. Guess I’m just an old dinosaur!
      HA!
Merry Christmas to you too Laura, with wishes for plenty of restorative R & R over the holidays.

I was in Chicago! My parents probably had the radio on too. They loved music. We listened to Christmas albums a lot back in the day. Merry Christmas, Laura!

1970, a very good year, no?
      😉

I can tell you exactly where I first heard this-sat at home, while the rest of the house sleeps on, on the 22nd of December 2019! So thank you for this, it’s the first time I’ve heard it.
By the way, in my last post of a night in Manchester, I called that particular area that you’re now familiar with as ‘Laura’s Place’, with no explanation. I hope a City Jackdaw follower visiting my city doesn’t try to find it by searching that on Google Maps!

    • laura bruno lilly

Awww, that is so cool! That and the fact that ‘Laura’s Place’ is becoming a local term amoungst ‘those in the know’
      HA!
BTW: my favorite of Jose’s pieces was/is his rendition of the Doors’ “Light My Fire”…look it up on YouTube.

      • Andy

I will look that up as I’m a huge Doors fan, but-would you believe it, this song that I’d never heard before has just come up on a Christmas Spotify playlist I had on.

        • laura bruno lilly

Oh, too funny! I think you’ll like Jose’s cover of the Doors song…Light my Fire was THE song during my Freshman year in High School…we had a jukebox in the lunchroom and that was on constant play selection – and it was the LONG version of course!!!!

I don’t know where I was but It will always be a favorite Christmas song of mine. Feliz Navidad y Feliz Año Nuevo, Laura!

    • laura bruno lilly

Maybe you’ll get to celebrate this season in your favorite Mexican get-away next year?
      Here’s to a hopeful 2020, Janis.

In 1970 I was still in the UK – I had turned 20 that year – I flatted in London by then – I probably went back to Wheathampstead for Christmas festivities with my sister and her family. My other siblings and my parents were back in New Zealand… I was sent to live with said sister in 1968 when a medical issue was to seriously affect my Mother and none of the siblings on home turf thought they could cope. The diagnosis that my Mother had been given was wrong…but still both my parents died before I returned to NZ in 1975 (both were old…)
Christmas in the Northern Hemisphere was certainly different – it probably snowed at some point! Whereas, most of you know that now here in NZ, it’s supposedly summertime a vastly different Christmas is celebrated.

Thank you for sharing that slice of your life, Catherine.
The holidays seem to hold good memories of family times past with anticipation of good times now and in the future…

That song was considered to be pretty “out there” when it first hit the radio but grew in popularity . Definitely a favourite. May you and your loved ones have a Merry Christmas and wishing us all a peaceful New Year.

    • laura bruno lilly

It is interesting to look back and now realize what was once new has become part of the ‘normal’ lineup of holiday songs.
Best wishes to you and yours, also, Jane.
