    Great poem. Can I offer
    The sunflower/grows alone/and tall/attaining a dominance/and a penchant/for flattery

      But of course, Andy, pen-on…
I noticed the cool photo on your latest post that seems related to this so here’s the link for anyone interested!

      • Andy

Thanks for that. I’ve had that photo, meaning to post it, and your post here reminded me to.
Those lines that I have shared here I wrote when about nineteen, they made it into my Heading North.

Just looked it up in my copy – yep, it’s there!

FOOD CHAIN (something I wrote to schew on)
    When
    Dog
    Met
    Cat,
    Each
    Ate
    The
    Other’s
    Chow.
    When
    Man
    Met
    Bull,
    He
    Ate
    The
    Critter’s
    Cow.

Oh the Bard strikes again! You’re the best, Joe.
      😎

“All those rows of seeds-each one a new life.” That inspired a sense of “awe” in me! Have an enjoyable day, Laura.

That visual is so rich/ripe/full, isn’t it?

  6. Mary J Puckett

Nice poem! I never heard of “poem in your pocket day” but it seems like a good idea 🙂

    • laura bruno lilly

      Glad you enjoyed it!

“turning their lives into celebrations is not easy”
This line struck me with its timeliness. It may not be easy, especially with Covid-19, but it is worth the effort to turn your life into a celebration. Or so I believe.

  8. Mariss Stevens

the long work / of turning [life] / into a celebration / is not easy
    [but oh so worthwhile]
Thank you Laura for reminding me of my intention to read more of Mary Oliver. What a remarkable poet and essayist

    • laura bruno lilly

      – sigh – you’re most welcome, Mariss.

There are sunflower growers in my area, and nothing stops the highway traffic like these fields in full bloom! So many people were pulling off the highway to romp in the fields and take photos, that the growers have had to fence off the fields. Nothing cheers the soul like these wonderful flowers!

    • laura bruno lilly

Fields of Sunflowers…the image is quite freeing.
I’d ‘romp’ with respect – the urge would be too strong to resist!

  10. L. Marie

Part of my comment vanished. The last line was: Do tell what made you choose this particular poem, Laura.

    • laura bruno lilly

I felt an affinity with the Sunflowers…

  11. L. Marie

My goodness! She had a way with words, didn’t she? Every line is a work of art! Thank you for sharing, Laura!

    • laura bruno lilly

You nailed it, L.Marie, ‘every line is a work of art’
