The road ends, but the journey continues...

Fun Friday Banana Box Update

Okay, I’m psyched.
I scored 5 – yes 5 – banana boxes a few days ago. And guess where I got ‘em? That’s right, the very same Food Lion that gave me the song and dance about turning them in for ‘credit’.
Fine. I kinda thought that customer service lady just didn’t want to bother with me the customer asking for banana boxes…
That was then…as for now…
A few days ago, I noticed a friendly looking produce person busily arranging lettuces. So, I went up and asked for a few of the boxes she had just emptied. “Oh sure, these are nice ones and haven’t been broken down yet. How many do you want?”
Of course her eagerness to comply with my request fueled my resolve to inquire about those darn banana boxes.
“Wow, thanks these are great.” I was warming up for the zinger.
“Oh, and hey, are there any banana boxes in the back?”
Friendly produce person’s eyes lit up as she raised her pointer finger for me to wait right there. She disappeared behind those odd plastic-y hanging drapery things that are commonly used to separate the back storage area from the rest of the grocery store.
After a few minutes, she returned in triumph with 5 – yes 5 – banana boxes and offered to help me take them back to my car.
What a score!

Hi Laura, I just read through your recent posts and enjoyed your thoughtful commentary. Thank you for sharing. Love your happy score at the grocer’s too.

Welcome, Jocelyn! I stopped by your blog and love those Puffins! They are not only beautiful and full of personality, but survivors! So glad they rebounded and are still on this planet for us to enjoy. Selfish, I know!
Take care, canadianneedlenana. (Cool handle, too)

  2. Andy

In the end I guess it’s all down to the ‘type’ of individual you ask.
Incidentally, when I was just seventeen, I worked for a few months in a greengrocers in a brand new shopping mall, as I guess you call them over there?

    • laura bruno lilly

      Hmm, I’m thinking you’re meaning:
greengrocers = produce section of a grocery store
and that the grocery store is inside of a larger shopping mall which = a place with many different types of stores.
Funny putting our English words together in context of our different ‘dialects’!

  3. soulpuzzles

Love this, it is always down to the individual who will help or go that extra mile. Some just can’t be bothered, bit of a jobs worth.

    • laura bruno lilly

Very true…makes those banana boxes a bit more special.

  4. Mary

And how nice when someone actually cares about a customer’s needs!

    • laura bruno lilly

Yes! Zippy zings forth a profound truth…

  5. Catherine de Seton

definitely pays to “access the personality” before you ask…hope the helpful lady doesn’t get into trouble with her bosses about the lose of that “credit”…
even though I think you are going to use those boxing for packing up your life objects – you could say they are for an art installation 🙂

    • laura bruno lilly

I like that idea of my life objects being for an art installation, Catherine.
And not too worry, friendly produce lady didn’t get in any trouble!

  6. Janis

Good for you! Btw, I was at a produce store recently (I think when we were traveling on Vancouver Island) and saw a banana box! I, of course, thought of you and wondered if I could ask for it and send it to you… then I realized that we were traveling… and I didn’t have your address.. and that my husband would kill me. Oh, and those thingies are called vinyl strip curtains 🙂 .

    • laura bruno lilly

HA! Too funny, Janis. Maybe someday we can meet up by the vinyl strip curtains of a mutually acceptable grocery store!

  7. Marty

Of course, you do realize that now you’re obliged to post later about what you’ve done with said banana boxes. You can’t just brag about banana boxes and not follow through with all of us!

    • laura bruno lilly

LOL – I guess one could say you’re waiting with banana-baited breath to learn of their purpose…
As I mentioned to Roseanne, when the time is ripe oops I mean right – all will be revealed…HA!

  8. Lisa Kleist

Some days are just good days!!!

    • laura bruno lilly

It’s the little things in life that help us along, eh?!

  9. Mariss Stevens

Glad you got those banana boxes in the end. In my part of the world apple boxes are good for packing house contents — they are strong, smallish and with slits for handles. There’s a bit of useless information for you!

    • laura bruno lilly

Oh not as useless as you obviously think! I’ll have to ferret out a few said apple boxes and see how they fare in this hemisphere!

  10. Roseanne

SWEET! Now what are you using the banana boxes for?? Should I be stalking my local grocery store for some banana boxes as well . . . inquiring minds want to know. ~smile~ Roseanne

    • laura bruno lilly

Heh-heh you are the one now aren’t you? Inquiring minds will be told when the time is right. And you are not alone as Marty is also curious…

  11. Jill Weatherholt

Being persistent typically pays off. Nicely done!

    • laura bruno lilly

Thanks! And then there’s that fine line of persistence vs nagging!

  12. L. Marie

Yay!! Congrats! I thought of you when I glanced at the banana box currently holding many of my books.

  13. Ally Bean

You are a *winner winner chicken dinner* with this one. Five banana boxes. Good haul.

    • laura bruno lilly

I’ll claim that prize for tonight’s repast! Thanks Ally.
