ToDo for the weeks following February 25th:
- Sew up scraps have on hand √ African Fabric ones done
- Decide thread/quilting for Michelle’s African Fabric wall-handing √ done
- Work on Final Scores for Goat Suite (Saga) in progress
- Help Flatten the Curve in progress

I’ll start with the most important of these ToDos – Help Flatten the Curve –
Support our Health Care Professionals.
This admittedly hard ToDo is one small effort that makes a huge difference.
It’s heartening to know hunkering down in my tiny home helps in the Grand Scheme of minimizing the spread of COVID-19 – as well as results in rewarding project progress.*
Since my last ToDoTuesday, I squared up the scrappy blocks (before photo here) I stitched together from the bits of Michelle’s lime green African Fabric wall hanging. I made one up as a sample quilt sandwich for use in exploring different threads & quilting techniques on the wall hanging and another to share with a friend.
Interesting to note that the gold metallic thread shown above and a variegated lime/gold/red metallic thread (not shown) both blended too well into the piece resulting in a blah and dull machine blanket stitch finish around the actual African Fabric blocks. Desiring to use something from my thread basket stash, my eye gravitated towards a spool of copper metallic (not shown) and voilà! Perfetto! (Yep, intentional use of two different language exclamatory words)
As stated before – My creativity trinity is as follows: fiber art – MUSIC – writing. Each is intertwined with the other, offering needful respites between projects which in turn aid in the completion of various Works-In-Progress as new perspectives appear from such respites. Ultimately, it’s all about the music but tracking fiber art Works-In-Progress is lots easier to communicate in such a setting as this – hence the linky-party connection with my friend, Roseanne.
That said, I’ve re-started in earnest the Final Edit process of my Goat Suite (Saga) scores. The first movement is completed in two forms: one for insertion into the total three movement GSS score and the other as an individual first movement score with extracted parts.

*While social distancing, sheltering in place, and lock-down mode are difficult in and of themselves, please know I fully understand I’m far removed from the huge demands many of you are facing right now, such as parenting children in such an environment (much less ‘expecting’ for that matter and the anxiety associated with the logistics of labor & delivery in these times), or care giving elderly relatives or end-of-life issues or fill-in-the-blank life challenges…I wish I could offer you practical respite. Meanwhile, I pray for mercy & grace to be upon us all.
Always love to hear how you are interleaving your creative pursuits. Copper metallic sounds like a win 🙂 And well done on the progress on the music front.
Thanks for linking up at the Chameleon’s colour and inspiration party.
Oh I always enjoy your posts from ‘down under’ and let’s not forget the Chameleon’s input into them as well!
😉
Using those scraps to make a quilting sample for testing thread choices was a stroke of genius — so often the color we think will be perfect disappoints, and the color we think we’ll never use turns out to be PERFECT!
You’re so right…in this case the copper wasn’t even in the original line-up for those to test!!!
Thanks for stopping by, Rebecca.
Thank you, Laura, for an update on your “to do” list. I have been doing many things during my times at home, digging out stuff from boxes to set up an altar in the living room, reading “The Remains of the day” for the book club. Though the library is closed, we may be emailing our thoughts to the facilitator and sharing our viewpoints. Started exercising to videos that a relative sends me and will be going on Facebook live to watch a video of our art studio leader with suggested projects. Some times I get very tired and have a big nap but counter that with a walk in the neighbourhood, so good to get some sun and fresh air, plus I take my camera with me. I am not a quilter but have done one square for my bedside table, so enjoy seeing your projects and patterns.
“The Remains of the Day” very good read – plus it counts as a classic, so = extra kudos!
Well, I enjoy the fruits of your photography taken during your outings…and digging through old, packed up boxes is always good. It is after all **Spring** and that urge to purge and nest and clear out and refresh is strong.
Take care
Such bright, refreshing colors. Love them.
Thanks, Lori!
Your sewing project is coming along beautifully! I’ve been reading conflicting information about the need for home sewers to make fabric masks for caregivers. It seemed like a great way to contribute to the cause. Now I’ve read that they really aren’t effective or needed. Oh well. We continue to flatten the curve here in SoCal, although there are too many stories about idiots who are ignoring the pleas. The more we do this as a society, the better it will be for everyone, especially those whose lives have been turned upside down with this. Stay well, my friend!
So glad to catch you here and at other bloggers posts…feels neighborly!
The sewing of fabric masks just emphasizes quilters/peoples innate need to pitch in at the drop of a needle (!). And all of us, quilters or not, are feeling the oddness of our ‘doing nothing, but doing everything’ by just staying home…
See ya around the neighborhood, friend.
(blugs!)
Lockdown is almost here completely, you have until Friday to be safe somewhere. They had to extend it from tonight (Wed) due to logistics. You can uptake essential services include food shopping if you are general population. But I’ve fallen into another level where that’s not doable…this is because of my current health issues. I’ve been making changes, and I have “helpers” if I want. But when you’ve been independent for so long, it’s hard to say “help”
Although I have plenty of to do art-wise, I haven’t been able to sit down and just do…I felt somewhat suffocated on Monday, as I thought well there is so MUCH time in a day. I made a list a week or so back (I keep forgetting what the day is) and even though people are probably home around here, it’s very quiet. I live in a private rental unit, and there are two units here but the other is empty. The new tenant is supposed to move in Frid, but is that an essential need – also no idea how he planned to move in. Lots of people will get semi-stuck on people movement.
Anyway it’s interesting how this is panning out…and yes I’ll get back to “making real objects” soon…
Yeah, this is hitting all of us in a myriad of ways and with all of us in various stages of life…Hang in there, Catherine.
Looks like you’re keeping busy in the best way possible. Laura. My wife is a member of a fiber arts group here, but they’ve cancelled their weekly meeting. She hasn’t yet done anything on her own, so I’m going to share this post with her. 🙂 Stay productive and healthy!
Hi to Gorgeous!
😎
It’s good to have a plan, and a structure too! Always a weak point of mine. I hope to begin soon, the kids beginning to fall into a routine. We’ll all get through this.
I’ve always been of the mind: Make an outline and then let the Lord flesh it out…
Provides initial structure but lots of fluidity within/without it…I’m claustrophobic in many ways other than the literal 4-walls type.
“We’ll all get through this” Thanks for that!
Glad to hear your projects are benefiting from the current situation. Take care.
Glad to hear you’re getting back to your ‘Kinky’ musical roots – HA!
Bless you for making masks…You take care, too.
Hi Laura! Thank you for sharing the beautiful block you sent with everyone. Why didn’t I think to do that?!! I will add it to my Thursday loves STAT. Like Laura, I would love to hear your score as well. Is that even possible – when you are comfortable sharing it anyway? We are doing our part and staying inside as much as possible while caring for the littles now and then and getting groceries for Sue’s mom when needed. I am looking forward to being on the downside of the curve. Our state (Wisconsin) has issued a stay-at-home order through April 24th! Wowee. Thank you for linking up this week. Stay healthy and safe. ~smile~ Roseanne
Thanks for the vote of confidence in my projects, Roseanne!
I noticed a lot of lime green projects in your linky list this time around…maybe I’m ahead of the trending curve?!HA!
Sounds like you’re soldiering on and doing what needs to be done – for yourself and those you love. You are all blessed to have each other.
It sounds like you have made big progress on your Goat Suite. I can’t imagine what it feels like to compose music, but guess that it would make one’s brain tired and sore from all that “thinking” activity. Thank heavens for mindless stitching and its “needful respite”. Do you know that I read it as “needleful”. Ha. Glad the copper thread worked for you.
“Needleful” funny, that…all a matter of perspective!
Many great reminders in this post and I love the fabric/design in progress – wow!
Thanks, Tierney!
I bet I know who that friend is! 🙂 I love the colors you’re using, Laura. Perfect for spring! I have faith that we’ll all get through this challenging time. Stay well!
Like I said before, the colors match your blouse in your avatar! So I’m thinking you’re partial to lime green?!
BTW: thank you for keepin’ on with your ‘essential services’ job – and stay safe in doing it.
So glad you figured out what to do in the thread situation! What a fun and colorful project to work on! Glad also you’re working on your Goat Suite (Saga) scores. I’m crocheting and working on a novel. Though we’re on lockdown, I couldn’t help getting out for a drive to drop off a birthday present for a little boy and to pick up food from a friend. So many people were out walking dogs.
Well, getting in the car to deliver ‘aid’ (little boy’s gift) or receive ‘aid’ (picking up food) is acceptable as I understand lockdown (but we’re not in lockdown yet, so I’m no expert)In the details of your drive, I notice you have a fixed car TO drive now! Yay!
Hubby delivered ‘aid’ to our bachelor mechanic neighbor kitty corner from us in the form of a meal the other day (okay okay if you insist, it was my most excellent – ! – take on shrimp scampi with linguini and rosemary crusty bread). Hubby rang the doorbell and stood far away until neighbor answered and they chatted in proper social distancing form. The guys are feeling the effects of self isolation, too, I can tell you!
Your scrap project is joyful. I like those colors together. I like your commentary at the end of this post. I, too, am not responsible for children or the elderly. I pray for grace and mercy, too– while adding a bit of light to blog world as best I can. Stay safe, be well.
Sounds like we’re doing what we can, eh Ms Bean?
Happy to hear the colors of my scrappy blocks added some joy to your day.
Take care.
Will you be recording any of your music on YouTube, Laura? I would love to listen to your score!
Since I fall into the essential services category, it is difficult for me to practice social distancing. The same for my step-mom (who is a care giver). I homeschooled my children, so I do understand that aspect (and my children are currently forced to homeschool their children). Beginning tomorrow, my state will be in lock-down, which is a good thing, because I have observed that there are quite a few who are not taking this serious enough. Those who are no longer working, those who find it difficult to obtain basic necessities…I pray for grace and blessings. Stay safe and healthy!
I’m toying with that idea – I have a score playback I can upload…with a little google-research on how to transfer it from NOTION program and all. 🙂
While I have the piece actually recorded, it’s not mastered yet (long ongoing issue) or ready for ‘distribution’. Putting the score playback on Youtube could be used as a timely prep for the real EP’s release. Thanks for priming the pump on that, Laura!
In the meantime, thank you for keepin’ on with those ‘essential services’…Like I mentioned in my post – I wish I could roll up my own sleeves and help in a practical manner, but I’m transferring that energy into ‘staying home’ as a form of ‘help’.
You stay safe and healthy, too.
Toying is good. 🙂
I hear ya…will try to comply!
