The road ends, but the journey continues...

My Snow Day Weekend

Over the weekend here in the Carolinas a Cold Snap peaked on Saturday, with a Snow Dump of about 4 inches Sunday morning.

We were ready for the ‘bad weather’ predicted locally. Except for the prospect of power outages (there were none, yay!) due to ice on the many exposed power lines in the area, the ‘bad weather’ arrived as an exciting & welcome whiff of winter for this displaced Coloradoan/New Mexican couple.

It felt like home.

Saturday morning, I woke up ill. Much of the ‘bad weather’ stuff I’d planned to do inside the house during all the town closures was scrapped. However, the perk there was that I sat up in bed, comfy cozy as best as possible, chugged hot herbal ginger tea and read most of the morning. Just finding a good novel these days has been challenging for me, so when one of the 4 books* I checked out at the library in prep for our ‘bad weather’ turned out to be a winner – I dove deep into the story while burrowing deeper still under the blankets.

I woke up Sunday feeling much better and like I said was greeted with a winter wonderland scene not often seen in the Carolinas.

We raised our floor to ceiling blinds in the Living Room to let in our vista view of that winter wonderland (and resultant cold drafts**). Even if the stars of the show were our 2003 Toyota Camry & Jeep Liberty parked on the slab in front of our house**, they nestled neatly against a backdrop of snowy serenity.

After baking a batch of oatmeal raisin-nut-choco-chip cookies (one of the ‘bad weather’ stuff I got to finally do!) and after hubby ventured outside to swipe off the snow on said vehicles, I began implementing my Big Plan.

“What’s that,” you say?

“Let me tell you,” I reply.

While hubby was out front doing his sweeping broom thing over the tops of those vehicles, I went out the back door and filled a big bowl with…snowballs.

Oh, I love me a good snowball fight! Problem is, I can’t make the darn things fast enough while the action is taking place. And hubby is just better at that sort of thing than I, so I decided to even up the score by padding my luck so to speak.

Aha! Caught him totally by surprise with my first throw – bullseye!

“I knew you were gonna do that!”
he shouts as he turns around to take aim and fire off his quickly formed (and large) snowball in return.

His face looked curiously confused as he sees me advancing instead of cringing at the approaching snowball.

Then he spots my secret weapon as I bring the bowl forward and draw another snowball from my handy arsenal.

Let it be known that this was the first and only snowball fight I ever won. Just sayin’…

😊

To celebrate, I let him continue with his vehicle chores while I took to making snow angels on our front yard…

** South Carolina houses of the sort built in the 1970s aren’t well insulated and often don’t sport carports much less garages, in case you didn’t know. I think it’s a Southern thing.

Very surreal about all that snow in the Carolinas. I saw on Mary’s blog her winter wonderland also. Sorry you were feeling ill and glad you made a quick recovery. Snowball fight! How fun 🙂

My victory is now nothing but a sweet memory. 😉

You had me smilin’, Laura! I have lots of memories of snowball fights, snow angels, and sledding. It is so strange this year…we’ve not had the snow that we should. Not even close! But I am delighted about the Carolinas, since my daughter and her fam live in North Carolina and have gotten to enjoy snow! Maybe I am claustrophobic, but it is very rare for me to close the blinds, with the exception of light shining on the tv when I want to watch it. Maybe it makes a difference that I don’t have close neighbors, either. No need for privacy. I am glad that you weren’t ill for long so that you could have play time! Play time is so much more important than many people think! 🙂

    • laura bruno lilly

I’m with you on the blinds – rarely do we have the house ‘closed down’. And yes to playtime! 🙂

  3. Jennie

Snow is so much fun, unless you get 18”. I’m glad you enjoyed your snow!

    • laura bruno lilly

Been there done that on the 18″ stuff – just not here where we currently live! 😉

      • Jennie

        😍

Unfortunately, I know about that phenomenon of the drafts coming in after opening the drapes. Our new home desperately needs new windows. 😩 The cookies sound good!

    • laura bruno lilly

When weather is extreme there’s always the weighing in on (open) letting the light in vs (closed) keeping the temp even inside the house. 90% of the time, open wins hands down!

Wonderful read! I’m still thinking about the “oatmeal-raisin-nut-chocolate-chip cookies” part. I’m thinking: those cookies, coffee, and sitting at a kitchen table looking at the snow, priceless.

    • laura bruno lilly

HA! A coffee guy! There’s nothing quite like a mug of dark roast juxtaposed against the soft sweetness of a homemade cookie (or pastry!!!)

Haha! Good for you! I can’t imagine being in a stuffy marriage where silliness like snowball fights – or their equivalent here where it doesn’t snow – don’t exist. Smart to bring the extra ammunition. I’m glad that you got over your cold quickly and were even able to dive into a good book. I’ll have to check that one out. I’m always looking for recommendations.

    • laura bruno lilly

Well, it’s unusual here in SC to have snow of any type, but being from CO, it’s a welcome & fun reminder of my/our roots! About the book – like I said (slight disclaimer here) this book is an odd one, but engaging! Feel free to let me know if you do check it out & what you think.

There’s nothing like a snowball fight to make you feel young 😃
Maybe it’s always been the case – check out footage of this one from 1896! https://youtu.be/FBWZFUDb_Qs?si=jlD_VS_Jnys2MA-N
There’s several versions available, it’s original but think it’s been enhanced in its restoration.

    • laura bruno lilly

Oh how funny the bike rider would even think to pedal through the fray! And everyone is smiling, fancy that.
In this day of AI, I have to admit if you hadn’t told me it was an enhanced restoration I would have thought it was entirely AI ‘created’ ;-( Or even, more kindly, a ‘colorized’ version of the B&W historic filmclip re-Ted Turner movies back in the late 80s early 90s.
Back in those days, inventive persons were doing all sorts of things to try to make ‘moving pictures’ so I’ve no doubt the backstory is possible and probable. Perhaps restoration of such gems should keep some roughness to feel more authentic. Of course, AI could fake that, too if it was indeed an AI generated clip. Geesh!

Laura, you have me smiling away! I’m applauding your forethought and preparation for the snowball fight and yeah! A first win! His face must have been a picture as the snowballs just kept coming! 😀 How often do you get such snow? Did you have a hot chocolate and your cookies to warm up afterwards?

Oh,I’m sorry to hear you were poorly but sounds as if your cosy reading day did the trick. It does feel great when one has a brilliant book to be a companion when recovering from an illness. Just one doesn’t want that book to ever end!

Wishing you a safe and cosy rest of the week. hugs, Annika xx ❤️

The Southern states rarely if ever get such snow. It’s a treat to frolic for those of us from other states (me, Colorado, hubby, New Mexico)…but often a challenge for those locals – mostly adults, the kids go wild! – who’ve never dealt with it at all.
Yes, there was plenty of hot cocoa (with real whipped cream) to go around. Later I enjoyed a couple (yes, probably too many!) cookies with a mug of my favorite dark roasted coffee! 🙂

  9. Khaya Ronkainen

YAY to snowball fight first win! 😀 Love the joy in your post, despite the bad weather and feeling ill. Stay warm!

    • laura bruno lilly

Thanks for celebrating with me, Khaya!

  10. marissthequilter

Oh what fun! Congrats on your first win. Strategy counts. (A snowball fight is a foreign thing for me, so I especially enjoyed your account.)
    Glad you are better.

    • laura bruno lilly

Like I mentioned to Cheryl – Brains over Brawn! Yes, I am doing better, thanks Mariss.

  11. Jane Chesebrough

Oh, you are devious, but sounds like you have the snowball thing down right. Did you hear of the monks Walk for Peace? They were in the Carolinas recently, and are on their way to Washington.

    • laura bruno lilly

Yes, they are soon (relatively speaking) to descend upon DC!

  12. Cheryl Batavia

Laura, I am glad you got to play in the winter wonderland! 💕 Congratulations on winning the snowball fight! Great strategy! ❄️❄️❄️

We have had several freezing nights in South Florida. Most years that doesn’t happen even once!

    • laura bruno lilly

Thanks, Cheryl. Brains over brawn, right?!
Let’s hope the orchards are able to withstand the worst of it – with lots of help from their anti-freeze machines, of course.

  13. piecefulwendy

Yay for the triumph (and stealth)! Hope you are feeling much better by now!

    • laura bruno lilly

Yep, all’s well by me. Thanks for stopping by, Wendy!

  14. Deborah J. Brasket

What a fun read to wake up to! I loved hearing about you and hubby making love and war in the snow, and those snow angels brought back memories of my childhood in Indiana. I love it here in California, but I have such nostalgia for the winter wonderland of my youth and totally get your joy in this winter gift you received.

    • laura bruno lilly

So glad to contribute to some Monday fun in the start of your new week, Deborah.

  15. zippyquilts

Indeed, the lack of insulation in older houses and the air leaks that come with age can make said houses a challenge in cold weather. And congrats on winning the snowball fight 😀

  16. petespringer

I love this. How often do we just cut loose and act like kids again?

    • laura bruno lilly

I’ll bet you and your bros do a fair amount of ‘cutting loose’ when you’re together! 🙂

  17. Midwest Mark

Sounds like a perfectly lovely snow day…especially since it’s such a rarity there! Congrats on your equally rare snowball victory.

  18. Wakinguponthewrongsideof

    A morning to read!!

    • laura bruno lilly

I thought that might ring true for you! Wishing you a few ‘mornings to read’ during these winter days. 😉

  19. L. Marie

I’ve been hearing about the snow in your area. What a surprise! I’m glad you’re coping with it. It’s cold all over. Glad you won your snowball fight and made snow angels. That’s the way to celebrate a snowy day.

It’s been cold and snowy here too. But that’s normal for us! 😊

    • laura bruno lilly

I hope you’re stocked with hot cocoa treats and such – that makes winter much more palatable (punny, eh?!) over the long haul.

      • L. Marie

I have plenty of tea. I could use some hot chocolate though.

        • laura bruno lilly

L.Marie – in between Chicago storms, I suggest you get thee out to the store and pick up some cocoa mix and real spray-from-the-can whipped cream!!!!! Virtual cheers to you.

  20. Michael Watson PhD

I love it! Glad you had such fun!
We dodged that storm. Just too cold to snow!

    • laura bruno lilly

Hey Michael, great to hear from you. Stay warm, rested and ‘protein-ed up.’ You’re right, it was fun!
